The goal with this book was to find a visual solution to represent a large amount of data. I cataloged how much tea I drank for one week (and I drink a lot of tea). At the time, tea was a very mobile experience for me; I rarely finished a cup of tea in the same place it began. I collected pictures of the start and end of every cup of tea and other bits of information like the time and, ultimately, compiled this sixty-some page book chronicling the week of tea.

Indivisible

Date: August 2010
Client: Indivisible
Skills: Identity and branding
Tools: Photoshop, Illustrator

Indivisible was a streetwear brand with a goal of actively pushing politics out of the way to focus on the fact that we are strongest together. The aesthetic goal with the identity package was to create clean and sharp material that was curiously unsettling. My intent was to take advantage of the asymmetry naturally presented by the name and force the viewer to play with its actual definition as it applied to the mission of the company.

Date: April 2011
Client: Personal
Skills: Photography, identity and branding, publication design, website design, writing
Tools: Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, HTML, CSS, JavaScript
Link: http://l.cationmag.com

L.cation is a travel photography publication I conjured in reaction to the trendy demonization of classic and cliche tourist locations. The magazine's premise is that, regardless of location, if one's eyes are truly open, they will see beauty. All of the photos are plotted on a map to further drive the point. With this project, I've been the photographer, the editor, the designer, and the marketer. In addition to being something about which I'm passionate, L.cation has helped me understand how the different pieces and departments involved in large projects fit together.

Earnest Wright is a New York based menswear company. They had a clear visual aesthetic in mind when they approached me, but needed help finishing the branding and establishing a basic web presence. The logo needed to be elegant, but still masculine, and easy to apply across a variety of media.

Funnybook

Date: September 2007

Tools: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator

The Funnybook is the annual student directory at PUC. I was awarded the opportunity to hold the title of editor for the 2007/2008 school year. In a very humbling experience, I learned the importance of, not only trusting the team around me, but also leveraging their expertise to complete such a large endeavor. The most daunting element of the project was collecting, processing, and organizing such a large amount of data and so many photos. Overseeing the production of the Funnybook certainly impacted the organization of my workflow in a positive way.

Then Be was a short challenge I presented to myself: build something simple and clever with emerging web recommendations and technologies in one evening. It is a very simple interactive flow chart that made most people chuckle with its binary outlook on life's problems. While this project is neither exceedingly well-designed or built, I include it here as an example of how quickly I adapt to the modern design and development climates. It shows my ability to pick up foreign concepts and put them into use quickly.

Fresh Routes

more info

Date: April 2010
Client: Personal
Skills: Identity and branding, web design
Tools: Illustrator, HTML, CSS

Fresh Routes was a digital publication I started with a friend to explore ways to make vegetarian food that still tasted great. With its tagline, "a new direction in vegetarian living," one of the biggest branding challenges I faced was finding a way to hint at the proper pronunciation of the name so the double entendre could shine through. Not wanting something as blunt as the phonetic spelling, I opted for the illustrated roots growing out of the word in question. The idea was to subconsciously suggest to the viewer how it should be read. When removed from the logo, the roots became an unusual branding element to alleviate the weight of always seeing the full logo.

Campus Chronicle

more info

Date: August 2007 - March 2009
Client: PUC Student Association
Skills: Layout design, print production, creative direction
Tools: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator

The Campus Chronicle is a small-circulation bi-weekly newspaper with magazine-style content. This multifaceted project began with a full redesign to make it look and feel more like a magazine than a newspaper. The editor and I set up a style guide that included things like no text being allowed on the cover and a one-of-a-kind "broken" grid that kept each page of text-heavy content visually interesting. Additionally, throughout my run as creative director, we gave every cover story extra attention to separate it from the serialized content. With strict looming printer deadlines, we weren't always able to do everything we wanted visually, but we never missed a deadline and very quickly learned how to prioritize.

J.Elquist Clothiers

more info

Date: November 2009
Client: J.Elquist Clothiers
Skills: Identity and branding, website design
Tools: Illustrator, HTML, CSS

J.Elquist is a start-up menswear brand with a passion for the culture and resulting fashion of the first half of the twentieth century. While branding the company, I kept a photo of the Empire State Building nearby and Frank Sinatra's greatest hits on standby. I imagined a world where we were still sanding down the rough edges after the industrial revolution. Even though it had to pay its respects to the past, the branding also had to boldly take a step into the new world. This was primarily achieved through the application of the logo in a brash, "in your face" manner.

Tools: HTML, CSS, Wordpress (with minor PHP)

Photographer Terence Ford needed a classy and understated website with a content management system to showcase his wedding photography. The primary objective was to make sure his photos were the highlight of the site. After incorporating his branding, we established a sparse layout that would force design to sit in the background. We chose to implement a custom Wordpress solution to leverage its flexibility as a CMS.

Quicksilver

more info

Date: June 2007
Client: PUC Visual Arts and English departments
Skills: Art direction, layout design, print production
Tools: InDesign, Photoshop

Quicksilver is the annual visual art and literary magazine at PUC. As the art director during the 2006/2007 school year, I was responsible for designing and managing the production of that year's edition. The main design challenge was presenting text-heavy content in an aesthetically intriguing manner while preserving the integrity of the writers' original intentions. This project also marked my first foray into keeping a lot of varied information organized in order to produce the final product.
